Angeline Sukke, age 90, of Benson, MN, died Sunday in Gabriel House in Murdock.  Funeral services will be Thursday, Dec. 3, at 11 a.m., at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson, officiated by the Rev. Gary Brandenburg.  Visitation will be Wednesday, Dec. 2 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. , at Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson.  Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. The family prefers memorials to be sent to the donors’ favorite charity.

Wayne ‘Bud’ Gensler

Wayne “Bud” Gensler, 85, died at home November 23, 2015.

A Masonic Service and Memorial Service was scheduled for the Rosemount United Methodist Church, Sunday, Nov. 29 at 12 noon, 14770 Canada Ave W, (651) 423-2475 with interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Wayne was born Dec. 8, 1929 in Terrace, Minnesota to Walter and Ingrid Gensler.

Wayne graduated from Benson High School in 1947 and entered the United States Army, discharged in May 1949, and called back as reserve March 1950 to April 1953. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 1403 in Benson and the American Legion; he was a member of the Corinthian Masonic Lodge 67 and Rosemount United Methodist Church.

Norman Bosch, of Montevideo, died Friday, November 20, 2015 at his home in Montevideo at the age of 79.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 24 at 1:00 PM at the United Methodist Church in Montevideo with Rev. Gwen Bohlke officiating. Interment will be at Terrace Lawn Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be held on Monday from 5-8:00 PM at the Anderson - TeBeest Funeral Home in Montevideo with a prayer service at 7:45 PM. Visitation will continue at the church for one hour before the services on Tuesday.

Randy H. Wester

Randy Hilmer Wester was born on Sept. 19, 1962, in Benson, Minnesota, the son of Thelford and Mabel (Strom) Wester.  He was baptized at Lake Hazel Lutheran Church and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson. He attended Benson Schools, where he participated in wrestling and cross country. He graduated from Benson Senior High School with the class of 1981.   He then moved to Litchfield, Minnesota where he worked for Pamida for a short time before attending Hutchinson Vocational College. He then worked for 26 years with HTI in Hutchinson with the Waste Water Treatment Plant.

Swift County wins $4.95 million state broadband grant

Swift County and Federated Telephone Cooperative have received the highest award in this year’s latest round of funding for expansion of broadband services in Minnesota.

Friday the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) announced that Federated and Swift County had been awarded $4.95 million.

The project will deliver high-speed Internet service to 600 households, 425 businesses and 75 community institutions, DEED said.  The project affects 13 of the county’s 21 townships concentrated on area just east of the Benson city limits.

The area in Swift County included in the project is most of each of the following townships in the eastern half of the county: Kerkhoven, Hayes, Pillsbury, Dublin, Kildare, Camp Lake, Benson, Torning, Cashel, Swenoda, Six Mile Grove and Clontarf.

Sherri Lynn (Mills) Middleton passed away November 18, 2015 at home in Houston, Texas with her husband, Peter, nearby.

Her celebration of life was held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson, Monday, Nov. 30 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Art Wiese officiating. A visitation was held for one hour prior to the service.

Sherri Lynn Mills Middleton was born May 11, 1955 in Benson, Minnesota, the daughter of Orie Earl and Marilyn Elizabeth Mills. She was baptized May 22, 1955 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson. She was confirmed May 17, 1970 at Trinity Lutheran Church. She graduated from Benson High School May 29, 1973. She attended Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter and the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. She married her partner of 23 years, Melville Peter Middleton, March 26, 2011 in Houston, Texas.

City cemetery adding a columbarium

Benson’s City Council approved spending $34,770 to purchase a columbarium for the city cemetery. It will have to spend another $7,000 or more for sidewalks, a crane to unload the columbarium and other work around it when it is installed.

A columbarium, most of which are constructed of granite, is designed to hold the ashes of people who have been cremated.

Last year, the council set aside $40,000 in its 2015 budget for the purchase of a columbarium and associated work. It then tasked its cemetery committee to study columbariums and possible sites in the city cemetery where one could be located. Monday night the committee brought its recommendation to the council....

Robert Grussing dies in accident Tuesday

 

At approximately 3:28 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 17, the Swift County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call of a vehicle in the ditch south of DeGraff on 70th St SE. 

The driver of vehicle, identified as Robert Grussing, 59, of DeGraff, had apparently died at the scene. 

It appeared from the investigation that the pickup was traveling northbound on Swift County Road 31.  His vehicle then apparently went into the southbound lane and into the ditch hitting 70th St. SE coming to a rest in a drainage ditch on the north side the road.  The cause of death is still under investigation. 

There were no other vehicles involved or any other people in the vehicle. Grussing was transported to the Ramsey Medical Examiners for an autopsy.  Responding agencies were Swift County Sheriff's Office, Murdock Fire, Murdock First Responders, Kerkhoven Fire and Rescue and Kerkhoven Ambulance.
