What Will Bring People To The Benson Area?

By Reed Anfinson
Publisher, Swift County Monitor-News

Swift County, District 777 Public Schools, and City of Benson residents are getting practiced at giving their input to elected officials. It is a refreshing change. Too often citizens sit on the sidelines and complain.

But over the past year, citizens have given their input in shaping a $26.3 million school levy for construction of a new performing arts center, the addition of classrooms onto the Northside Elementary School for early childhood classes and day care, for new gymnasium space, for new classrooms at the senior high dedicated to 21st Century learning approaches, a new cafeteria and kitchen at the Northside, and for a new band room.

Now, through the new Swift County Community Perspectives Committee, citizens will be giving their thoughts to county commissioners on a potential new justice center or coming up with another approach to meeting county building needs.

Citizens speak on justice center, attorney

By Reed Anfinson

Swift County Monitor-News

At the vast majority of the Swift County Board of Commissioners meetings the citizens comment period passed with no one speaking because no one is present to address commissioners. That hasn’t been the case in recent months as citizens show up to register their opposition to the proposed justice center.

With numerous citizens showing up lately, the 5 minutes traditionally set aside for comments has been greatly inadequate as speakers can take a half hour to 45 minutes of commissioner time.

At the county board’s Tuesday, April 16, meeting Commission Chair Hendrickx tried to bring greater discipline to the citizens comment period on the agenda.

County board delays Wold justice center study

By Reed Anfinson

Swift County Monitor-News

With another group of concerned Swift County citizens attending the board of commissioners meeting Tuesday, April 16, a trend is developing that could raise concerns for a proposed justice center’s prospects.

That was a point made by Commissioner Ed Pederson, District 2-north Benson and Benson Township, at last week’s meeting. He pointed out that the plans call for the potential closing of Idaho Avenue along the block south of the courthouse. It would become a parking lot.

In order for that street closure to happen there would have to be a public hearing by the City of Benson and it would have to be approved by the council. “I think that may be a problem in itself,” he said.
