Kerk Legion wins sub- district title

The Kerkhoven Legion Baseball team won three games last week to win the sub-district baseball tournament title.  Kerkhoven, which improved to 5-4 overall with the three wins, beat Granite Falls, Thursday (2-1), Montevideo, Saturday (7-3), and Granite Falls again, Sunday (7-6).

Kerkhoven, which placed fourth at the State Class A Baseball Tournament this past spring with many of the same players, won two of the games without the services of two of their top players (Alex and Isaac Call).

Regan Carlson had two hits during the win over the 2-1 win over Granite Falls, while Christian Diederich, Carlson, and Wylee Lottman each had three hits against Montevideo, and Levi Sweere, Weston Gjerde, and Hunter Wilts had two hits each during the championship game win, Sunday.

Picking up wins on the mound for K-Town were Alex Call, Carlson, and Noah Thorson.

BHS trap team competes at National Shoot

Ten members of the Benson High School Trap Shooting team competed at the National Shoot, July 10-14 at Mason, MI.  They attended the event with coaches Andy Abner and Neal Klassen, along with most of the parents.

Competing at the National meet for the BHS Trap team were AJ Klassen, Reece Larson, Devon Liles, Brady Ascheman, and Jake Ness, who formed one team, and Gabe Abner, Hunter Mondor, Zander Hoffman, Jared Kurkosky, and Macoy Kurkosky, who were part of a second BHS team.

In the team competition, the BHS Squad #1 scored 443-of-500 clays and placed 110th of 206 total teams, while squad #2 scored 428-of-500 clays and placed 153rd.

Only the top 80 squads advanced to the finals so the BHS teams barely missed the cut.

Clear Strategy Needed To See Rural Minnesota Grow

By Reed Anfinson
Publisher
Swift County Monitor-News

At its meeting last week, Swift County’s commissioners were a couple question every leader in rural America is being asked: What are the most critical strategic challenges the county faces?

Dawn Hegland, executive director of the Upper Minnesota Valley Regional Development Commission, posed the question to our five county commissioners. The RDC serves local units of government in Swift, Chippewa, Yellow Medicine, Lac qui Parle, and Big Stone counties by assisting them with planning and economic development.

“What the RDC board is asking is, what are a couple of strategic issues in the region we can help with?” Hegland requested of commissioners. She told them the RDC was willing to allocate staff time to the priorities they identified.
