  Production and stockpiling of approximately 30,000 cubic yards of Class 5 aggregate in EASTERN Swift County for use on the County Road System.

Schliemann, 97, of Benson, Minnesota died Thursday evening, August 1, 2019 at Homestead Place North in Benson.  Visitation will be held 4-7 p.m., Thursday, August 8 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Benson.  Visitation will resume from 10-11 a.m., followed by the funeral at 11 a.m., Friday, August 9 at the church.  Pastor Jason Wolter will officiate.  Burial will be in the Appleton City Cemetery.

Marjorie Lucille Newell, 93, of Benson, Minnesota died at her home Sunday, July 28, 2019.  Visitation was from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., Thursday, August 1, 2019, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Benson.  Interment was in the St. Bridget’s Catholic Church Cemetery in De Graff.

Marjorie Lucille Newell was born July 14, 1926 in De Graff, Minnesota, the daughter of Frank P. and Loretta (Byrne) Newell. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in De Graff. She attended elementary school at District 28 Country School and De Graff Public School, and later graduated from Benson Senior High School.

Benson Jr. Legion eliminated by ACGC

The Benson Jr. Legion baseball team closed out the season with a 6-5 loss to ACGC in the third-round of the North/East Sub-State Jr. Legion Tournament last Tuesday night in Benson.

The Benson Jr. Legion ended the season with a 10-7 overall record, which included a 6-4 mark during league competition.  The Bandits opened up the tourney with a 7-2 win over Kerkhoven before losing to Morris 12-2 last weekend and to ACGC last Tuesday.

“We played a lot of close games this year and this one was no different,” coach Mark Grussing said.  “It was a strange game as it was tied 5-5 after two innings and then each team would mount a rally but couldn’t push any runs across the plate.  We ran into some bad luck as we lined into two double plays and flew into a double play on a hit and run in the later innings...”

NL-Sunburg Lakers fall in first playoff game

The Norway Lake-Sunburg Lakers opened the 2019 postseason with a 6-4 extra-inning loss to Sacred Heart last Saturday in Sacred  Heart.

The Lakers, who fell to 4-8 overall with their six-straight loss, were set to play again Saturday against Milroy in an elimination game, but results of that game were not available by presstime.

Both pitchers went the distance for their respective teams during the 14-inning marathon, including the Lakers’ Brandon Rasmusson, who gave up 10 hits, six runs (four runs) and six walks with eight strikeouts.

Kyle Baker led the offense with three hits, while Justin Johnson and Brandin Dahl both had two...
