Wet year poses problems for those living along Minnesota 29 North

That it has been an extraordinarily wet year isn’t something you have to tell people with homes along the east side of Minnesota Highway 29 a mile or so north of Benson.

Basements that are too often flooded and ponds of water in their backyards tell the story of a high water table. When there is a heavy rain event, they see the fast flow of water along the border between their yards and the adjacent field.

Changes over the years along their property involving a birm that was removed, a wind row of trees that was altered, and the installation of pattern tiling in a field to the east may have all played a role in increased flooding residents are seeing.  However, no definitive study has been conducted to determine specifically what is causing the problem...

Freeze ends growing season; October 2-inch snows rare

It is rare for October to see snowfalls of 2 inches or more for the month – it had only happened only eight times since 1952. This past weekend’s winter storm pushed that number to nine with 2 inches of snow falling in the Benson area along with a cold drizzle and rain over the weekend.

As the temperature warmed to 37 degrees Saturday the snow quickly melted with not a trace remaining by the afternoon.

There are still 16 days to go in the month, so the 2019 snowfall total could increase. However, the forecast is for warmer temperatures through the rest of the week with no snow in the forecast...

James D. Feldman

 

James “Jim” Dean Feldman, 56, of Murdock, died Saturday, October 12th at his home after a two-year battle with osteosarcoma.  His funeral will be 1:30 pm, Friday, October 18th at Bethel Baptist Church in Kerkhoven.  Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Thursday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Jeanette Adell Alsaker, 95, of Benson, Minn., died Sunday, October 13, 2019, at Glenwood Retirement Village in Glenwood.  Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m., followed by the Funeral Service at 11 a.m., Saturday, October 19, 2019, at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson.  Interment will be in Our Redeemer’s Cemetery.

SWIFT COUNTY BOARD MINUTES September 17, 2019

Chairman Hendrickx called the meeting to order at 9:00 AM. with all members present with the exception of Commissioner Rudningen. Also present: County Administrator Kelsey Baker, County Attorney Danielle Olson, Terri Orr, other county employees and members of the public.

Chairman Hendrickx asked if there were any changes or additions to the agenda. Chairman Hendrickx had two additional changes under other business, consider approving Chief Deputy Recorder into the County Recorder and Registrar of Titles position and consider approving the new job description for Deputy Recorder. There were no other changes.

  
09-17-19-01 Commissioner Fox moved and Commissioner E. Pederson seconded to approve the agenda as amended. Motion carried unanimously.

Cross-country teams race at Montevideo

The Benson-KMS cross-country teams both placed fourth at the Montevideo Invitational last Tuesday at the Crossings Golf Course in Montevideo.

Natalie Jorschumb was sixth and Allie Mitteness 15th to lead the Benson-KMS girls team, while Will Magaard was seventh and Jaron Furney was 16th to lead the BKMS boys squad.

The cross-country teams were set to host the Benson-KMS Invitational, Monday, Oct. 7 at the Benson Golf Course before getting ready for the postseason.

The Section 6A Cross-Country Meet is set for Thursday, Oct. 24 at Pierz and the State Cross-Country Meet is set for Saturday, Nov. 2 at St. Olaf College.

Bethany Rosemeier (2013) was the last Benson-KMS girl to qualify for the state meet, while in the last 13 years, Ben Murphy (2008), Josh Bailey (2015 and 2016), and Jon Tostenson (2017) have qualified for the boys cross-country program...

Tennis team eliminated with 4-3 loss to LQP

The Benson-KMS girls tennis team was eliminated with a 4-3 loss at Lac qui Parle/Dawson-Boyd, Friday at LQP Valley High School.  The match had been set for Thursday, but was pushed back a day due to weather.

Benson-KMS, which was seeded fifth in the eight-team section, ended the season with a 9-9 overall record, while LQP-DB moved on to face top-seeded Minnewaska Area in the semifinal Tuesday (yesterday) in Fargo.

The Fighting Braves still have the Section 6A Individual Tournament to go and members of the team will take part in the opening two rounds Wednesday (today) at Fargo.

Stacy Johnson will be playing singles for the Fighting Braves at the section individual tourney, and the doubles’ teams of Hannah Andrews-Susan Knutson, and Halle Bundy-Kaitlyn Berreau will also be competing, but the other singles’ entrant has yet to be decided...
