All That Cardboard Tells A Story

By Reed Anfinson

With people stuck at home for much of the past two months, there have been some changes in shopping habits – one good for small-town America, one not so good.

Many people have shied away from the big box stores in regional shopping centers that have seen a significant number of COVID-19 cases. Neighboring Kandiyohi County has recorded 468 cases of the deadly coronavirus as of Monday. Stearns County, the home of St. Cloud, will have over 2,000 cases by the time you read this column. Shoppers are also avoiding the grocery stores in regional centers, preferring to buy their goods closer to home.

BHS seniors: Not the ending they had in mind

BHS seniors miss out on special memories to close out high school years

Benson High School is set to conduct graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2020 this Friday at the outdoor swimming pool park.  A total of 62 students are listed as members of the BHS graduating Class of 2020.  The graduating list can be found on page 2 of this week’s paper.

The outdoor graduation ceremony, which includes social distancing restrictions, is just of the many changes the BHS seniors have had to overcome as they closed out their final two years of high school.

Seniors throughout the state and country have missed out a lot in their final year of high school.  After coming together as students in Head Start, preschool, and kindergarten, the Class of 2020 has gone through 12 years of high school together before their final three months were taken away due to the COVID-19 shutdown,.

Members of the Benson High School Class of 2020 will receive their diplomas at the Benson Family Aquatic Center during a ceremony scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m.

It is the one site available in the community where the school administration could bring together the graduating seniors, families and friends that complied with the current state emergency order under the COVID-19 protocols.

Benson High School’s administration had planned to conduct the graduation ceremony at the football field, but the state put an end to those plans.

The Minnesota Department of Education and the Office of Higher Education issued guidance saying indoor graduations and ceremonies held outside in stadiums and on football fields were not permitted. The agencies encouraged schools to hold online events.

At the meeting, it was to consider a resolution to allow for outdoor service and for the expansion of facilities to provide that service.

The resolution states that:

“The city manager is authorized to accept, review and either approve or deny applications from local businesses that wish to expand their outdoor service during the declared emergency.

“The city manager is authorized to allow the use of public areas, including local streets and sidewalks, for businesses that wish to expand their outdoor service during the declared emergency.”

Bluestem Dental opens with safety measures in place

By Reed Anfinson

Swift County Monitor-News

When area residents go to Bluestem Dental in Benson for their appointments in the coming weeks, they will find some changes aimed at keeping them and the office’s staff safe.

As the number of COVID-19 deaths and cases increased rapidly throughout America and the world, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz issued a stay-at-home order effective from March 28 to April 10. Under the order, people could still go to the grocery store, shop for essential supplies, and go outside for a walk or run. But many non-essential businesses were shut down. Among those non-essential businesses were dental offices, except for emergency procedures.

As the number of deaths due to COVID-19 continued to rise from just 5 to 50 over the two-week stay-at-home order, Walz extended the order to May 10. By May 9 the state’s death toll from COVID-19 increased to 558 and the order was extended to May 18 with some modifications.
