Tropical dew points create heat indices in the 100s

Dew points in the tropical Amazon Rain Forest can be lower than what the Benson area experienced this past weekend.

With the high reaching 91 last Friday, and dew point at a steamy 77 degrees, the combination of moisture in the atmosphere and hot temperatures made it feel like it was 104 degrees outside. There was no relief from the sweltering heat Saturday.

Dew points stayed in the 70s throughout the night last Friday into Saturday morning, and began rising as the day heated up.

Excessive heat advisories were issued for both Friday and Saturday, warning people of the dangerous conditions created by high heat and tropical dew points...

County CARES funds going to businesses, health

Swift County is committing $250,000 of its $1,136,857 federal CARES Act funds toward countywide economic development assistances for businesses hurt by the COVID-19 pandemic.

It has also voted to set aside $120,000 for public health funding and $100,000 for county expenses related to coping with the spread of the deadly coronavirus.

It took action at its Tuesday, July 21 meeting, to approve the funding for the Swift County Rural Development Authority (RDA) to oversee the disbursement of $250,000 in economic assistance funding for businesses...

Arnold A. Johnson

Services celebrating the life of Arnold A. Johnson, 76, of St. Joseph, Minnesota will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 31 at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home Chapel in St. Cloud. 

Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery in Waite Park. 

Arnold died Friday at the St. Cloud Hospital. 

There will be a visitation after 9:30 a.m., Friday at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home in St. Cloud.

Allan Bjorklund, 81 of rural Lake Lillian, Minnesota died Monday, July 20, 2020 at the St. Cloud Hospital. There was a gathering of friends and family at his home, 15510 30th St., Lake Lillian, Sunday, July 26 from 1-5 p.m.

Burial will be in Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Cemetery at Benson at a later date.

Arrangements are with Dirks-Blem Funeral Service of Olivia.

Lois H. Winkel

Lois H. Winkel, 76, of Paynesville, Minnesota (formerly of Benson) died Tuesday, March 17, 2020, at her daughter’s home surrounded by her children in Paynesville, under hospice care.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, August 1, 2020 at 11 a.m. at St. Bartholomew Cemetery, 160th Ave. and Hwy. 28, Villard, Minnesota. A light lunch will be served at the Villard Community Center following the service.

Family has requested social distancing and masks.

Lois (Sis) Hazel (Eblen) Winkel was born July 31, 1943, the daughter of Elmo E. and Lillian M. (Heschke) Eblen in Hudsons Township of Douglas County. She grew up in Forada, Minnesota and attended grade school there until the sixth grade, then transferred to Alexandria High School.

Ronald James Walter, 74, of Hitchcock, South Dakota,  passed away Friday, July 3, 2020, at Sanford Aberdeen Medical Center, Aberdeen, South Dakota after a strong and courageous battle fighting multiple cancers.

His funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 1 at the United Methodist Church at Hitchcock, with military honors.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, July 31 at the Kuhler Funeral Home.

Sister Shawn Carruth, Prioress of Mount St. Benedict Monastery, Crookston died unexpectedly March 26, 2020. 

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held August 6, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Mount St. Benedict Monastery chapel, Crookston, Minnesota.

Attendance will be limited to her family, designated clergy, and the Sisters of Mount St. Benedict Monastery due to COVID-19.

William “Bill” Regan

William “Bill” Regan, 73, passed away May 21, 2020, after battling cancer.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in DeGraff Saturday, August 1 at 10:30 a.m., with visitation from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Following the funeral, friends and family will gather at the DeGraff Activity Center.

Bill was born October 5, 1946 to Donald and Margaret Regan in Willmar, Minnesota. After graduating from Benson High School in 1964, Bill joined the National Guard. As a soldier, Bill was privileged to make several trips to Norway and to Japan. After 30 years of service, Bill retired as a First Sergeant.

Wallace “Butch” M. Gilbertson, 76, of Hawick, Minnesota died Tuesday, July 21, 2020, at the St. Cloud Hospital.

A gathering of friends and family was from 2-5 p.m. Saturday, July 25, 2020, at Johnson Funeral Home in New London.  Social distancing and masks were  required.  A private family burial will be held at a later date.

    
Wallace Michael Gilbertson was born May 21, 1944, in Vancouver, Washington, the son of Wallace and Ruth (O’Conner) Gilbertson.  He grew up in Benson, where he was baptized and confirmed at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church.  While Butch was in high school, he moved to New Ulm, where he graduated from New Ulm High School with the Class of 1962.
