What sports could look like during the 2020-21 school year

It will be interesting to see how sports work out this fall as well as the entire school year.  The Minnesota State High School League recently made some decisions involving the fall sports season, but it will have to deal with the winter and spring sports seasons in the future as well as continuing to monitor this fall’s limited list of sports to see if COVID-19 jeopardizes those seasons.

Girls tennis, soccer, swimming and diving, and cross-country got the go-ahead for this fall, while volleyball and football were moved to early spring.

No matter what the sport is, there seems to be a consensus that there will be a lot of changes this school year, including no hand clapping, high fives, team huddles, spitting, shaking hands after competitions, sharing water bottles, etc. as athletes, coaches, and fans will have to learn to live with a new “normal” during the COVID-19 pandemic...

We Must Ensure All Ballots Are Counted

By Reed Anfinson

Swift County Monitor-News

A record 77 percent of Americans could vote by mail in this year’s general election as they try to stay healthy during the deadly COVID-19 pandemic. As many as 80 million ballots could be mailed in this fall, twice as many as in the 2016 presidential election year.

The expected surge in mail-in voting is causing election officials to warn of major problems in getting ballots delivered by the U.S. Postal Service and counted by election officials. Democrats see this logistics problem being compounded by the Trump Administration’s unsubstantiated claims that mail-in voting will lead to massive voter fraud in the Nov. 3 election.

By Reed Anfinson

Swift County Monitor-News

Benson has four options if it is serious about pursuing retaining an economic development director, City Manager Rob Wolfington told the council at its Monday night meeting.

It can hire an employee, engage the services of a non-profit company that specializes in economic development, pursue through the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA,) or pursue a partnership with the Swift County Rural Development Authority or Upper Minnesota Valley Regional Development Commission.

Hiring an employee would require the city to pay public employee scale wages and benefits, he said. It could also complicate the city’s ability to cut the position in the future...
