COVID-19 cases rising in western Minnesota

By Reed Anfinson

Publisher

In just the first five days of April, Swift County has seen 17 new cases of the COVID-19 disease reported by the Minnesota Department of Health. And, that number is short a day since MDH didn’t report COVID cases or vaccinations Easter Sunday.

If it keeps up that pace, it will see more than 100 new cases by the end of the month making it the third worst month for new cases during the pandemic. Swift County saw a record 368 cases in November and 184 in December. There are worries that the state is seeing another surge that will not only bring new cases, but also a spike in new deaths.

Calls and Rudningen among leaders for Saints in 2020-21

The 2020-21 season did not go as planned for the KMS boys basketball team.  The Saints went 4-5 over their last nine games to end the regular season with a 6-12 overall record.  The Saints were seeded seventh in their half of Section 6A and were set to host 10th-seeded Ortonville in the opening round of the tournament.
However, a MACCRAY player came down with COVID-19 one day after the Saints played the Wolverines, March 11, forcing KMS to quarantine most of its team and end up having to cancel the rest of the season.
The abrupt ending to the season comes only three-plus months after the KMS football season was also cut short before the playoffs due to COVID-19.
•  Lac qui Parle and Prinsburg tied for this year’s Camden North title with 14-2 league marks, followed by Renville County West (11-5), MACCRAY (8-8), KMS (5-11), and Dawson-Boyd (3-13).

Remote work provides opportunities for rural America

‘Opportunity knocks but once. Taken at the tide, t'will lead to fortune. If denied, t'will never return.’

Attributed to William Shakespeare.

“In the midst of every crisis lies great opportunity,”  Albert Einstein observed. America and the world have faced the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic crisis for more than a year now. We’ve witnessed incredible loss in lives and devastating financial loss of some.  But out of this crisis also comes opportunity that could finally lead to the resettling of our rural communities.

“Pre-pandemic, Americans were tied to and lived where the jobs were — mainly in big cities. The pandemic and increasing acceptance of remote work is causing people to question why they stay tied to a location where they don’t want to live,” Maria Leonardi writes in her blog La Vita Libera (Live Free.)

McGeary, Kelley, Andrews earn WCC honors for Benson-KMS gymnasts

Libby McGeary earned All-Conference and MVP honors for the Benson-KMS gymnastics team this winter.

The Benson-KMS gymnastics team had a very memorable year in 2020-21.  The team not only christened its new home, the Benson Athletic Center, but the program finished the season with the first-ever state gold medal when sophomore Libby McGeary won the Class A balance beam title at the State Gymnastics Meet.
McGeary, competing in the all-around at the State Gymnastics Meet at Champlin Park, scored a 9.6 on the balance beam to place first in the Class A Gymnastics Meet.
Last year, McGeary qualified to the state meet in the all-around, placing 19th overall in the State Class A competition.
This year, McGeary went on to place 13th overall in the all-around (36.15) in the Class A Meet while also placing 26th on the floor exercise (9.0), 32nd on the uneven bars (8.575), and 37th on the vault (8.975).
