KMS volleyball rallies for 3-1 win over Braves

The Benson volleyball team pulled out a fourth-game 31-29 decision over Minnewaska Area, Thursday to give the Braves their first victory of the season.  Earlier in the week, the Braves fell to KMS in four games in the season opener last Tuesday in Benson, 25-11, 20-25, 22-25, 14-25.

Against the Lakers, two games went overtime as Benson lost the first game against Minnewaska Area, but rallied to win in four, 27-29, 25-10, 25-15, 31-29.  During the fourth game of the match against Minnewaska, the Braves lost sophomore Claire Ricard to a freak injury when she sustained a laceration on her left pointer finger, which required five stitches and forced her to leave the match.  “Her teammates really stepped it up for her and it was an emotional win for us,” Benson head coach Shannon Schmidt said.  “It was a really crazy, fluke injury.  We’re still not quite sure how it happened.  She will likely be back in a week or two; we’re just thankful it wasn’t worse.

This week, Benson was set to play at Morris Area-CA, Tuesday (yesterday) and host Melrose Area, Thursday (tomorrow).
