The KMS wrestling team’s state tournament trip last season was selected as the Top High School Sports Story of 2017.

KMS High School dominated the list of the Top High School Sports Stories of 2017.  The KMS wrestling team was selected as the top story, followed by the KMS softball team, Sam Gjerde winning the H-R award, Jon Tostenson earning state berths in track, cross-country, and with the KMS wrestling team, and the recent terrorist threat at the CASE-IH Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament.

Following is a look at the top-five stories, followed by other memorable stories and events from the past year.

#1-KMS wrestlers back to state
The KMS wrestling team’s trip to the state tourney was selected as the top sports story of the year again as the Saints qualified to their second-straight state tourney last year, going 1-2 at state to place sixth.  KMS lost to Pierz in the first round (44-19), but came back to edge Pipestone (37-36) before losing to Kenyon-Wanamingo in the consolation finals (37-19).

KMS also qualified six wrestlers to state for the second-straight season with Derek Krieger placing sixth, and Dylan Rudningen and Will Magaard both placing seventh.  Also qualifying were Jared Carlson, Caleb Collins, and Brandin Dahl.

KMS, which won the state title in 2009 and also placed sixth in 2013 and went 0-2 in 2016, went 16-5 during the 2016-17 season, losing only to teams that either qualified to state, or lost in the section finals.

Four wrestlers reached 100 career wins during the season, starting with Caleb Collins and continuing with Jon Tostenson, Derek Krieger, and eventually, Dylan Rudningen at the state tourney....
