Michael J. Mathis
June 17, 1940 - March 9, 2018

Michael J. “Mike” Mathis, 77, of Kerkhoven, died on Friday, March 9 at Swift County-Benson Hospital in Benson.  His funeral service will be 1:30 pm, Tuesday, at Bethesda Lutheran Church in rural Murdock.  Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery in Kerkhoven.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.  Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home, Kerkhoven.  www.hafh.org

Mike Mathis was born on June 17, 1940, in Cherokee Iowa, the son of Loyal and Freida (White) Mathis.  He moved to Minnesota from Iowa in 1952, and grew up in the Murdock area. He graduated from Murdock High School in 1959.  He worked while still in school for a local farmer. He entered the United States Army National Guard. After the National Guard he worked for TCI in Benson, then for Quast trucking where he retired from. After retirement he continued to help neighboring farmers with field work.  He was united in marriage to Linda Prekker in 1966.  This marriage ended in divorce. He lived in rural Benson before moving to rural Kerkhoven following his divorce.

Mike enjoyed deer hunting, and fishing, especially his salmon fishing trips he took. He also opened his home and heart to several foster children. His family and friends will miss his sense of humor.

Mike is survived by his foster son, Jim (and special friend Bunny) of Benson; sister Merna (and Cleo) Moist of Murdock; nephews, Daniel (and Andrea) Moist and Christopher; niece Lorie Moist (Scott Hall, Daniel); and several other nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. 

Mike was preceded in death by his parents and nephew Keith Moist.
