The Benson football team was eliminated for the season with a 33-13 loss at Minnewaska Area in the Section 5AA quarterfinals last Tuesday night.  The Braves were seeded seventh in the 7-team section, and the Lakers were seeded second.

The two teams also met up in the regular-season finale, six nights earlier, with the Lakers also winning that game 45-0.  This time, the Braves were in the game through halftime before Minnewaska Area expanded a 19-0 halftime lead to 33-0 on the first play of the fourth quarter.

“Overall, we played much better than our regular-season game against them one week earlier,” Benson coach Scott Gonnerman said.  “It still hurt our passing game not having Will Enderson at quarterback (injury), but we did get Jared Knutson back from an injury, and having three practices before the playoff game helped us.”

Minnewaska Area, which improved to 7-2 overall, moved on to host third-seeded ACGC, Saturday, while the Braves closed out the 2018 season with a 0-9 record.

“Paynesville looks to still be the team to beat in Section 5AA, but Saturday’s game between Minnewaska Area and ACGC should be a great game.  ACGC is playing great football and is healthy, and Minnewaska Area will need to play turnover-free.”

Seniors lost to graduation from this year’s Benson football team are Matt Goossen, Jared Knutson, Hunter Gonnerman, Riley Grube, Devon Liles, Alex Wrobleski, Cole Petrick, and Matt Ebnet.  “We will miss our seniors next fall for their leadership on and off the field, but know that they will be successful in their new adventures and activities,” coach Gonnerman said....
