The Benson baseball team lost three close games last week, including a 3-2 loss to Montevideo in the opening round of the Section 3AA Baseball Tournament, Saturday at Paynesville.  The Braves finished the 2019 season with a 6-11 overall record, which included a 4-10 mark within the WCC, tying with Montevideo for seventh place.

Earlier in the week, the Braves closed out the regular season with a 5-3 loss at home to Morris Area last Monday and a 3-2 loss to the Tigers last Tuesday, also in Benson.

Seniors lost to graduation from this year’s Benson baseball team are seniors Jared Knutson, Matthew Goossen, Matt Lenarz, Matthew Ebnet, and Alex Wrobleski.

“I am pleased with how our guys competed this year,” coach Mark Grussing said.  “While we finished 6-11, we lost eight of those games by 1 or 2 runs and nearly every single one of those games was a low-scoring affair. For the most part, we didn’t beat ourselves with poor pitching or defense; we just struggled to score runs in key situations.

“I couldn’t be more proud of our seniors. They were good leaders and great young men. They had a passion for the game of baseball and I feel fortunate to have been able to coach them.”
