Alissa Maurer, a ninth-grader from Benson, is set to compete at the State Girls Class A Golf Tournament, June 11-12 at Pebble Creek Golf Course.

Maurer overcame a tough first day at the Section 5A Girls Golf Tournament by shooting a 93 on the second day and earning the final state tournament berth by one shot.  Maurer had a 110 the first day and sat in 21st place before shooting the fourth-best score of the second day to climb into eighth place overall.

Maurer became the fifth girls’ golfer to reach state in BHS history, joining Jenny Sullivan (1992), Chelsa Dooley (2004 and 2005), Abby Fragodt (2008 and 2009), and Lauren Alsaker (2009 and 2010.

Maurer was set to tee off at 12:54 p.m., Tuesday, June 11 and will golf the first 18 holes with golfers from Pine City, Mounds Park Academy, and Ortonville.

A total of 88 girls will be golfing in the Class A Tourney, which includes eight teams that qualified as section champions.

Lac qui Parle easily won this year’s Section 5A title with a 720 score, but Benson placed second overall with a 840 total, followed by Lakeview (888) and West Central Area (890).

LQP sent its entire team to state along with the top five golfers from the other teams -- Jessica St. Martin of West Central Area (187), Ella Mork of Dawson-Boyd (194), Makayla Rasset, of Ortonville (195), Rachel Lund of Dawson-Boyd (196), and Alissa Maurer (203).

At this year’s Section 5A Tourney, Stacy Johnson placed 12th overall (106-103--209), missing a state berth by six strokes, while Anna Samuelson was 15th (105-108--213), Danielle Reuss was 16th (103-116--219), and Katelyn Young was 21st (113-112--225).

•  Maurer also just missed out on qualifying for her second-straight All-Conference honor this season.  She averaged 54.8 strokes per nine holes as a seventh grader, but averaged 46.0 last year to place 11th last season, and averaged 47.5 strokes per nine holes this season and was 14th overall, missing out on All-WCC honors by one place.

•  Minnewaska Area won this year’s WCC title with 63 points, followed by BOLD (57), Morris Area (48), Montevideo (31), Sauk Centre (30), Benson (29), Melrose Area (19), and ACGC (incomplete).
