Benson Jr. Legion splits first two playoff games

The Benson Jr. Legion split its first two games of the North/East Sub-State Jr. Legion Tournament.  Benson, seeded third, beat sixth-seeded Kerkhoven, 7-2, in a game played last Tuesday night at Morris.

Benson then lost to second-seeded Morris, Thursday night, 12-2 to fall back into the loser’s bracket of the double-elimination tourney.

Benson, 10-6 overall this summer, was set to face fifth-seeded ACGC at 6 p.m., Tuesday (yesterday) in Benson.  With a win, Benson would play again at 5 p.m., Friday, at Minnewaska Area against the winner of NLS and Brooten.

The consolation finals are set for 7 p.m., Friday at Minnewaska Area and the championship game is set for 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 3 at Minnewaska Area with a second game to follow at 1 p.m., if necessary.

Top-seeded Starbuck and second-seeded Morris are in the upper-bracket finals, which was set for 6 p.m., Tuesday (yesterday) at Minnewaska Area.

The winner of the tournament advances to the State Tournament, set for Aug. 9-11 at St. Charles.

Benson finished the regular-season as the third seed in the North/East Jr. Legion standings.  Starbuck won the league title with an 8-2 record, followed by Morris (7-3), Benson (6-4), Brooten/BBE (2-2), ACGC (4-6), Kerkhoven (3-7), NLS (2-8), and Sauk Centre (1-5).

In the South/Central League, SH-MACCRAY and Minneota tied for the title with 11-1 records, followed by Granite Falls (7-5), Madison (6-6), Montevideo (4-8), Dawson (2-10), BOLD (1-8), and Cottonwood (1-11)...
