Volleyball teams open up season this week

The Benson volleyball team was set to open up the 2019 schedule with two-straight home matches, Tuesday, Aug. 27 against KMS and Thursday, Aug. 29 versus Melrose Area.  Benson went 8-15-1 overall last year after winning three of its final four matches.

“We are definitely looking to make a run at the section championship this season,” coach Shannon Schmidt said.  “We made a run in Section 5A last season, defeating KMS in a huge five-set match only to lose an equally-close match to Royalton.  We should have a solid team with a lot of talent, experience, and depth.”

Seniors lost to graduation from last year’s Benson volleyball team are Maranda Wieber, Paige Cain, and Matilyn Short.

However, the team does return most of its starting lineup from last season, including the top hitter (Claire Ricard), top servers (Zoe Doscher, Mariah Ahrndt, Abbie Mitteness, and Ellie Moesenthin), its top setters (Moesenthin and Ahrndt) and its starting libero (Mitteness)...
