Braves win consolation title at Lakeview Tournament

The Benson volleyball team lost two conference matches last week, but came back Saturday to go 3-2 to earn the consolation championship at the Lakeview Tourney.  The Braves, who are 7-9 overall and 2-5 in the WCC, lost at Minnewaska Area in four games last Tuesday and also lost in a four-game battle in Benson against Morris Area-CA, Thursday.

The Braves lost their first two matches at the Lakeview Tourney to BBE (2-0) and Lakeview (2-0), but came back to beat Montevideo (2-0) in their final pool play match and then won both of their consolation bracket matches against Edgerton (2-1) and RCW (2-0) to earn the consolation title.

“We started the day with some tough competition against BBE and Lakeview, which are two of the better teams we’ve faced this season in addition to Sauk Centre,” coach Shannon Schmidt said.  “Although we didn’t have the start we had hoped for, we finished strong, winning our final three matches in a row and dropping only one set.  It was a true team effort with different players stepping up at different times.”

This week, the Braves were set to play at Melrose Area, Tuesday (yesterday) before coming home Thursday (tomorrow) to host the league-leading Sauk Centre Mainstreeters, who have yet to lose in the WCC...
