We all have our stories of how the COVID-19 shutdown affected our lives, Katelyn Tolifson, a 2019 graduate of Benson High School, has her own.  Katelyn was set to run in the Fargo (ND) Half Marathon, May 9, but because of the COVID-19 shutdown, the actual race was called off.  Most runners had pre-registered and because there were no refunds, the runners were left with two choices.

“The runners had two options; to either run on the new race date of Aug. 29 or run in a ‘virtual race’,” Katelyn said.  “If you chose to run in the virtual race, the committee sent you a bib, a sweatshirt, and your medal.  I decided to stick with my original plan and run the virtual race May 9 since I had already been training and there were no refunds.”

Katelyn’s family and friends, along with other members of the community, helped make it a memorable “virtual race” for her as many people sent her messages of good luck, were on hand the day of the race to cheer her on, and her dad accompanied her on the run on his bike...
