Benson’s Municipal Airport new arrival-departure building is under construction and the price will astound many.

Back in 2019, the first bid on the 1,100 square-foot building came in at $859,547 and was rejected by the Benson City Council even though the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was picking up 90 percent of the cost. The engineer’s estimate for the project had been $450,000.

The final bid eventually came in at $657,000, still a price the council felt was absurdly high for the building that was being built. However, the two books with specifications for the building are probably three inches thick. Labor is paid for under the Davis-Bacon federal wage law.

Also, the FAA’s template for building these arrival-departure facilities doesn’t consider what local construction costs might be and how they would reduce the price...
