George F. Hennessy, 86, left his earthly life Wednesday, September 2, 2020, at his home in Melbourne, Florida.

A Funeral service with Military Honors will be held Saturday, September 19, 11 a.m at the Benson City Cemetery,

George was born April 17, 1934 in Danvers, Minnesota. He came from a large farming family with six sisters (five of his sisters, Lenore, Beverly, Marian, Susan and Norma Jean have all gone to eternal rest).

After graduating from high school, he joined the United States Air Force. During his four years of service, he met and married his wife Josephine. After leaving the Air Force,  they moved to Melbourne, Florida where he worked at the US Space Facility Cape Canaveral. He then worked for Radiation Inc. During this time, his wife and three children moved to Ethiopia where they lived for six years and traveled extensively. George and Jo took their family to many locations including Lebanon, Spain, Italy, Greece, Switzerland, Germany and Cairo among others. Radiation Inc. turned into Harris Corporation where he worked for a total of 33 years. He then worked for Bendix Corporation and enjoyed living in Korea and Okinawa and traveling with his wife. He was fully retired to his home in Indian Harbor Beach by 1999.

Throughout his life, he was a devout Lutheran. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran, Melbourne, Florida since 1957 and served on the board of elders; was President of the church council several times and served on committees and often with the upkeep and welfare of all the churches he attended. He concluded his membership with Faith Viera Lutheran Church, Rockledge when Redeemer closed in 2017. He was always finding things to fix including the repair of wheelchairs at Holmes Regional Medical Center.

He enjoyed traveling to visit his dear friends in the US as well as his children and grandchildren. Over his life, he played baseball, softball, bowled in leagues as well as golfing and boating. He especially enjoyed his travels to his home state of Minnesota for fishing with family and friends. Over his desk is a poem which is a fitting closing to his long life of 86 years.

I pray that I may live to fish until my dying day.
And when it comes to my last cast, I then must humbly pray,
When in the Lord’s great landing net and peacefully asleep,
That in His mercy I be judged big enough to keep!

George was preceded in death by his wife Josephine in 2013. They were married for 58 years.

He is survived by his son, Michael Hennessy, daughters: Tammy Miller, and Lisa Gemmill (Dan); and three grandchildren: Dathan Miller, Cameron, Max and Emma, Aaron Miller, Sarah Maceda (Pedro) Mariah, Erica, Cristian and Benjamin; a sister, Beatrice Pearson and a special friend, Judy Walker.
