Members of the Benson wrestling team started practice back on Nov. 18 and have been beating each other up for a few weeks, but they finally were able to get to compete against other teams when they went on the road for the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted tournament Nov. 27. The Braves had three wrestlers win their weight classes. Sam Svingen won the 121-pound bracket, Gavin Olson won the 127-pound bracket and Max Nygaard won at 145 pounds.
Benson was at the tournament with three other teams; Rocori, Rockford and the hosts HLWW. Benson finished the round robin tournament in third place with 74 points and HLWW won their home tournament with 180.5 points.
Nygaard was the only one of the three winners who had to wrestle three matches. He pinned Kameron Moscho from Rocori in the first round, pinned Ronin Vettleson in the second and earned a close 9-8 win by decision in the finals against HLWW’s Raydon Graham.
Svingen won the 121 bracket with a 2-0 record. Svingen pinned Max Larson from Rocori in the first round and followed that up with a pin of Logan McKee from HLWW to earn first place.
