Bonnie Jean Mikkelson was born March 16, 1932, in Montevideo, Minnesota, the daughter of Walter and Clarice (Lorz) Mattway. She spent her first 11 years living on her grandparents’ farm near Clara City, Minnesota. She attended first grade in Clara City and then went to country school through sixth grade. She attended school in Murdock and graduated from Murdock High School. After graduation, she went to work for Peterson Furniture Store in Willmar, Minnesota, and spent some time in Minneapolis working for Nichols and Smith.
In 1955, Bonnie was united in marriage to Roger Mikkelson. They farmed near Lake Hazel. Bonnie worked for Art Freiberg at the courthouse where she registered deeds. She then became the County Recorder and eventually went on to own and operate an abstract company. Although Bonnie and Roger had no children, they were very interested in their nieces and nephews activities and achievements. They were always very warm and caring.
Bonnie was active in her community with events at church like the Fall Festival. She was also the chair of the American Cancer Society of Swift County. She was an active supporter of them until she died. Traveling was a big part of Bonnie’s life. She traveled with her aunt. Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany, was a highlight of her adventures. Another highlight was a shopping trip she took to Hong Kong and Korea.
Bonnie and Roger lived on Roger’s farm near Lake Hazel for a while. They then moved into Benson where she had lived ever since. Unfortunately, her husband Roger died at the age of 42. Bonnie suffered a fall at her home and then moved into Scandi Haven Village assisted living in Benson.
Bonnie loved Benson and wanted to spend her last days there. Wednesday morning, September 25, 2024, Bonnie was called from this life at the CentraCare Benson Hospital. She attained the age of 92 years, six months, and nine days. Her family loved her dearly and will miss her terribly. Their hearts are broken, but with God’s help they will find peace and comfort in their grief, knowing Bonnie loved the Lord.
Bonnie is survived by her sisters: Beverlee Kvam of Excelsior and Janice Swanson of Bloomington; several nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband Roger Mikkelson and her parents Walter and Clarice Mattway.
Blessed be her memory.
