An ordinance governing the sale of edible products and beverages containing small amounts of THC was passed by the Benson City Council Monday evening. THC is the ingredient in marijuana that gets a person high.

The action comes in response to legislation passed last year legalizing the sale of the products containing a small amount of THC. However, it is also looking forward to the Minnesota Legislature possibly legalizing adult use of marijuana products in the state in the coming months. These products would contain higher amounts of THC.

To pass in the Legislature, the bill legalizing pot will have to go through dozens of hearings in both the House and Senate. Both bodies are controlled by the Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party with its members favoring passage. DFL Gov. Tim Walz has also indicated he would sign a marijuana legalization bill.
