Kobbermann helps Benson wrestlers win twice with pins in final matches
The Benson wrestling team had another busy week, competing in a home quadrangular last Tuesday at the Border West triangular, Thursday.
The Braves went 4-1 overall last week to raise their overall record to 8-9 and giving them a 6-3 record over the last two weeks.
During the home quadrangular, the Braves lost to Minnewaska Area (46-27), but also beat Wabasso (51-15) and BOLD (69-12), and at the Border West triangular, wins by heavyweight Johnny Kobbermann helped to give Benson victories over Osakis (41-36) and Border West (42-36).
Things slow down just a bit this week as Benson is set to host a quadrangular, Tuesday (yesterday) before wrestling against NLS, Friday.
Thomas Dineen won all five matches last week despite not hitting the mat. Dineen improved to 26-0 for the season with five forfeit victories last week. He is an unofficial 133-14 for his career, moving into sixth-place on the all-time Benson wins list behind Ryan Thompson (170 victories), Jared Knutson (138), Adam Carruth (137), Scott Thompson (135), and Brian Knutson (134).
Benson quadrangular
The Braves went 2-1 at a home quadrangular last Tuesday night, beating Wabasso (51-15) and BOLD (69-12) by wide margins while also losing the first match to Minnewaska (46-27), which went on to earn the title with a 3-0 record.
“It was a fun night in the gym with a lot of alumni in the stands. The guys wrestled tough and are continuing to improve every time out,” Benson head coach Scott Thompson said. “The bottom of our lineup is growing up fast and winning a lot of matches that’s putting us in duals.”
Against Minnewaska Area, Benson fell behind 34-0 before Nick Bolduc (pin in 2:42), Preston McGee (fall in 3:02) and Nathan Bolduc (15-10 decision) closed the gap to 34-15 with three-straight wins.
The Lakers clinched the victory with a win at 182 pounds, but AJ Klassen (pin in 1:36) and Thomas Dineen (forfeit win) also won for the Braves.
• Benson won 11 matches during the 51-15 victory over Wabasso. After a loss at 106 pounds, Ed Wah (5-4 win) and Darin Hippe (6-1 decision) tied it up at 6-6.
Wabasso won again at 126 pounds, but Blake Nagler (9-4 decision), Alex Whitcup (9-5 win), Jaiden Zimmerman (pin in 1:39), and Nick Bolduc (fall in 3:07) put Benson ahead 24-12. Wabasso won its final match at 160 pounds before Benson closed out the match with five-straight wins by Aiden Ehmcke (forfeit win), Nathan Bolduc (6-2 decision), Thomas Dineen (forfeit win), Johnny Kobbermann (pin in 1:35), and Jack Storlien (forfeit victory).
• Things went pretty much the same against BOLD as the Braves won 12 matches with the Warriors claiming pins at 120 and 145 pounds.
Picking up forfeits wins were Max Nygaard (106 pounds), Ed Wah (113), Alex Whitcup (138), Thomas Dineen (195), and AJ Klassen (220), while earning pins in the first period were Blake Nagler (1:56), Nick Bolduc (:47), Preston McGee (1:44), Nathan Bolduc (1:38), Teegan Hogrefe (:57), and Johnny Kobbermann (1:51), and winning by decision was Tanner Nelson at 126 pounds (9-3).
