MINUTES OF THE REGULAR SCHOOL BOARD MEETING
INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 777, Benson, Minnesota
Tuesday, February 20, 2018 – 5:30 p.m.
Benson High School Media Center
The meeting was called to order at 5:30 p.m. by Chair Chad Payne. Members present: Paul Carruth, Jodi DeJong-Hughes, Tammy Gunlogson, Mary Langan, Bill McGeary, Chad Payne, Gary Williams.
Also present: Dennis Laumeyer, Brad Johnson, Dave Benson, Mike Knutson, Pam Anderson, Shannon Schmidt, Kendra Razink, Heidi Davis, Shelly Vergin, Pat Wagenman, Duane Miller, Lori Klose, Mike Thompson, Roger Mitteness, Jeff Guest, Jeanine Bowman and Terri Collins.
Agenda was approved.
Consent Agenda was approved.
Progress Reports were presented by the administration.
Discussion was held regarding district security.
Discussion was held on steps 1-3 of the book Passion: 8 Steps to Reignite Yours. The board will read steps 4-6 to discuss next month.
The board approved Benson Schools to offer a summer food program.
In 2016 we came up with the Arts & Activities Plans. The Braves Pride Plan includes the Chain of Command, Vision Statement, Action Plan & Steps and the Five Pillars for Success for accountability and addresses concerns brought by community members. Shannon has been working with students for requirements on the five pillars. In March she will meet with coaches and advisors for their input on those requirements also as we look for a long term solution.
Part of the civic center project was installing in-floor heat. There is a concern about heating the space with in-floor heat when a large portion will be covered with thick mats. The board agreed to not install in-floor heating and install the hanging heaters/chillers to heat and cool the space and use the existing fans to circulate the air.
The board approved the Resolution Directing the Administration to Make Possible Recommendations for Budget Reductions.
First reading of the 2018-2019 draft school calendar with August 27 start date. The draft calendar has been reviewed by staff for comments. This will be year three of the three year waiver from MDE to start school before Labor Day. Graduation would be May 19 and the last day May 22, 2019.
First reading of the Grades 9-12 Student Registration Guide. Changes include a three year cycle for Ag classes, proposed classes for Auto Body, Personal Finance and CNA Training.
The board went into closed session at 6:44 p.m. to hold negotiations strategy for early retirement requests. The board ended closed session at 7:30 p.m.
