Rev. Harold Frederick Herman Heinzig, 90, died Friday afternoon, November 1, 2024, at the St. Cloud Hospital. Visitation will be held Saturday, November 9, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in the Benson City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson.
Harold Frederick Herman Heinzig was born  October 3, 1934, in Yellow Grass Saskatchewan, Canada, the son of Rev. William and Bertha Louise (Herman) Heinzig. He was baptized by his father Rev. William Heinzig in Canada and confirmed (by father in 1949) in Burlington, Iowa. He attended several schools in Saskatchewan and Alberta. His family moved to Burlington, Iowa in 1948 where he completed high school. He graduated from Wartburg College in 1956 and Wartburg Seminary in 1960.
Harold’s first call in 1960 was the Dannevirke Lutheran Church in Redvers, Saskatchewan. He served as the “German Shepherd” amongst mostly a first-generation Danish congregation for eight years.
September 2, 1967, Harold was united in marriage to Irene Ruth Niebergall by the Rev. F. Schmitt at St. Marks  Lutheran Church in Regina, Saskatchewan.  This union was blessed with two sons and over 57 years of marriage.
In 1969, they moved to Melvin, Illinois where he served in two churches, one at Roberts, and one at Melvin for six years. They then moved to Crescent City, Illinois where he served for 19 years before moving to Ringsted, Iowa. He served for 10 years as the “German Shepherd” for a Danish congregation once again. He retired in 2003 and continued to serve several area churches (Armstrong, Graettinger and a rural Estherville church) during his retirement. They moved to Benson, Minnesota in 2013 to be closer to family.
During his free time, Harold enjoyed golfing, reading, gardening, and having coffee with friends.  He loved to spend time with his family. Harold was called from this life  Friday, November 1, 2024, at the St. Cloud Hospital. He attained the age of 90 years, and 29 days of age.
Harold is survived by his wife Irene of Benson; a son Jason of Benson; a granddaughter Emma Heinzig; daughter-in-law Stephanie Heinzig, a sister Elaine Klingensmith of Sioux City, Iowa, a brother William Heinzig of Ankeny, Iowa; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Bertha, son Michael Heinzig, brother-in-law David Klingensmith, and sister-in-law Faye Heinzig.
