Donald William Grote, age 80, of Benson

Donald William Grote, age 80, of Benson, died Tuesday, December 16, 2014, at the Glacial Ridge Health System in Glenwood, MN.  Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, December 22, 2014, at the chapel of the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck, MN, with visitation for one hour prior to the service.  Interment will be in Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Morris.  Arrangements are with Zniewski Funeral Home.

Janis Manska, age 69, of Benson

Janis Manska, age 69, of Benson died Sunday, December 14, 2014, at the Golden Living Center Meadow Lane in Benson, MN.  Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 20, 2014, at the St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Benson.  Interment will be in the Benson City Cemetery.  Visitation will be held Friday, December 19, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and for one hour prior to the service.    Arrangements are with Zniewski Funeral Home.

James Alan Cavers, 66, Alexandria

James Alan Cavers, 66, Alexandria, died on Thursday, December 11, 2014.

James Alan Cavers was born on June 29, 1948, in Fairmont, Minnesota the son of James and Mildred Cavers.  He attended and graduated from Fairmont High School in 1966.  Jim furthered his education receiving his RN Degree from St. Barnabas Hospital in Minneapolis and then continued on receiving his degree as an Anesthetist at St. Paul Ramsey Hospital.

Jim was united in marriage to Ellie Fjordbak on January 18, 1969, in Benson, Minnesota.  After their marriage the couple moved to Minneapolis so Jim could finishing his schooling.  In June of 1972 the family moved to Alexandria where Jim worked for the Douglas County Hospital.  Jim and Ellie had three sons: Jim, Sean and Andrew.  He treasured his family and they enjoyed several camping trips and boating as kids. Jim worked at Douglas County Hospital for 40 years before retiring in 2012.

Glenn Kottke, 80, Des Moines, formerly Benson

Glenn Kottke, 80, Des Moines, passed away at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines on December 12, 2014. 

He was born March 17, 1934, in Benson, Minnesota, the son of Carl and Clara Kottke. He

Glenn worked for Chevron in marketing for 30 years. He was a HAM Radio Operator and enjoyed electronics and computers. Glenn was a master woodworker as well. Glenn loved his family, fishing and hunting. He will be missed by all who loved and knew him.

Glenn is survived by his wife of 56 years, Margaret “Peg” Kottke; children, Pamela Kottke, Scott (Karen) Kottke, Stephanie (Dennis) Griffin, Valerie Kottke-Cole, and Brett Kottke, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Shannon Kottke; brothers, Ed and Milt Kottke; and his sister, Violet Larson.

Irma S. Smith age 92 of Waconia

Irma S. Smith age 92 of Waconia passed away Wednesday December 10, 2014 at the Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia.

Memorial service 1:00 PM Saturday December 13, 2014 at Faith Lutheran Church (800 Waconia Parkway) in Waconia with Rev. Dale Peterson as officiant.  Interment in the Winsted Public Cemetery.  Gathering of family and friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Irma Sophie Machemehl was born the daughter of Conrad and Elsie (Tonn) Machemehl on September 9, 1922 in Winsted Township, rural Lester Prairie.  She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie.  Irma was the valedictorian of her graduating class of Lester Prairie High School.  After high school Irma began working for her grandfather Wilhelm Machemehl in his insurance agency.

LaVon Gunderson, of Montevideo, formerly of Big Bend

LaVon Gunderson, of Montevideo, died Saturday, November 22, 2014 at Luther Haven Nursing Home in Montevideo at the age of 92.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday November 26, 2014 at 11:00 am at Big Bend Lutheran Church.   Rev. Keith Long will officiate and interment will be in Big Bend Cemetery.  

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

John Goggin, 68, of Apple Valley

Burial services for John L. Goggin were held Wednesday, November 26 (today)  at 12:30 p.m. at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, Benson.
John Goggin, 68, of Apple Valley, passed away October 27, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer in Farmington, Minnesota. Funeral services were held November 14.
He was the son of Larry and Gladys Goggin of Benson.
He is survived by his sister: Denise (Albert) Andersen of Mendota Heights.

Esther A. Monson of Benson

Funeral services for Esther A. Monson of Benson were held Tuesday, November 25, at 11 a.m., at the West Zion Lutheran Church in rural Hancock.  Visitation was held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.  Tuesday before the service.
Esther Agnes Monson, 81, was born in Kerkhoven,  July 26, 1933, the daughter of John Axel and Katrina Johanna Linnea Johnson Magnusson.  She was baptized and confirmed at West Zion Lutheran Church.  She graduated from Kerkhoven High School.  
December 6, 1952, Esther was united in marriage to Harlan Dwayne Monson at Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis.  
She enjoyed spending time with her family and sewing.  She lived on a farm in Hoff Township, Pope County, in Clontarf, and Benson.  
Esther was called from this life  Wednesday, November 19, 2014, at the Northridge Care Center in Minneapolis.

Jessie Anderson, of Benson

Jessie Anderson of Benson died Wednesday, November 26, 2014, at the Swift County Benson Hospital.  
Funeral services were 1 p.m., Saturday, November 29, 2014, at the Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson.  Interment was in the Lake Hazel Lutheran Cemetery.  Visitation was held Friday, Nov. 28, from 4 - 7 p.m., at the Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church and for one hour prior to the service at the church.  
Jessie (Grussing) Anderson was born March 31, 1924, in DeGraff, Minnesota, to Fred and Annie (Bontjes) Grussing.  She was baptized and confirmed at Emmanuel Church in Benson in 1946 by Rev. M. Berg.  She grew up in the DeGraff and Benson area and attended school in Swift County.

Betty Petersen, 80, of Clara City, formerly of Swift Falls

Betty Petersen, 80, of Clara City died Sunday, November 23, 2014 at the Clara City Care Center.  
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 26  at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City.  
Burial was held in Louriston Township Cemetery.
Visitation was held one hour prior to services at the church  Wednesday.  
Betty Petersen, 80, died  Sunday, November 23, 2014, in the Clara City Care Center where she had resided for the past eight years, ending her long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Betty Jane was born  July 13, 1934 to Morris and Marie (Radischat) Mitteness of rural Benson. Betty was the seventh of 11 children, attended rural grade school, and graduated in 1952 from Benson High, where she was mighty proud to have played the Tuba in band. She was baptized and confirmed at Swift Falls Lutheran Church.
