Gloria Lee Smith, 68, St. Augustine, FL

Gloria Lee Smith, 68,  passed away May 21, 2015 in St. Augustine, Florida, following a brief battle against a deadly form of brain cancer.
A memorial service and reception will be held at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church in Benson, 1 p.m. Saturday, June 13. In lieu of flowers, Gloria had requested that donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, or the ASPCA, as she loved animals.

Donna Christenson “Chris ” Lamphere, 79, Jasper, GA

Donna Christenson “Chris ” Lamphere, 79, died of complications from C.O.P.D. at Piedmont Hospital in Jasper, Georgia on Wednesday, April 29, 2015.
Chris was born  June 2, 1935 in St. Paul, Minnesota. During her high school years in Benson, she was a cheerleader and in the drama club. She was also an accomplished pianist, writer, and singer.
She lived and worked in Minneapolis, San Francisco and Chicago before marrying the love of her life, Albert “Ab” Lamphere in 1965 during a Minnesota blizzard. After living in Virginia and then Florida, they settled in Nashville, Tennessee where they raised their two daughters, Nancy and Karen.

Amie A. Holm, 85, Benson

Amie A. Holm, 85, of Benson, passed away  Sunday, May 17, 2015, at the Appleton Care Center in Appleton, Minnesota.
Funeral services were held  Saturday, May 23 at 10 a.m. at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Swift Falls. Visitation was held  Friday, May 22, from 5-7 p.m. at the Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson and also for one hour prior to the service at the church Saturday.
Interment was in the Swift Falls Cemetery.
Amie Arlene Holm, 85, was born  March 15, 1930, in Jamestown Township, Blue Earth County, Minnesota, the daughter of Rennie and Emma Hanson Slaughter. She was confirmed at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Swift Falls.  She grew up in Swift Falls and attended country school through the 8th grade.

Michael “Mike” Charles Rooney, age 83, of Benson

Michael “Mike” Charles Rooney, age 83, of Benson, Minnesota passed away on May 14, 2015, at the St. Cloud Hospital.  Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am, Tuesday, May 19, 2015, at the St. Francis Catholic Church in Benson. Visitation will be held Monday, May 18, 2015, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, with a Rosary at 4:30 pm and a Prayer Service at 7:00 pm, at St. Francis Catholic Church.  Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.  Arrangements are with Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson.  www.zniewskifuneralhome.com .

Margaret A. Wersinger, age 95, of Danvers

Margaret A. Wersinger,  95, of Danvers, Minnesota, passed away Thursday, May 14, 2015, at the Swift County Benson Hospital.  
Mass of Christian Burial was held 11 a.m., Monday, May 18, 2015, at the Church of the Visitation in Danvers.  Visitation was  from 5-7 p.m., Sunday, May 17 with a Rosary at 5:30 p.m. and Parish Prayer Service at 7 p.m., at St. Francis Catholic Church in Benson.  Visitation continued for one hour prior to the service at the church.  
Burial was in the Church of the Visitation Catholic Cemetery.  
Margaret (Aust) Wersinger was born March 18, 1920, in Oyens, Iowa, the daughter of Theresa (Weynandt) and Nick Aust.  She was baptized  May 2, 1920 by Father Ralfus.  Margaret grew up on a farm in Oyens, Iowa and attended St. Catherine School.

Edgar Gene Christenson, age 89, Benson

Edgar Gene Christenson, age 89, passed away May 2nd, 2015, at the Golden Living Nursing Home in Benson, Minnesota.  Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 30th, 10:30 AM at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson, Minnesota. 

Edgar Christenson was born December 6th, 1925, on the family farm along the banks of the Chippewa River in rural Swenoda Township.  He was one of ten children born to the marriage of Albert and Minnie (Rodahl) Christenson. 

He was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church - Swenoda Township (Swenoda Lutheran Church) and confirmed at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Benson.

Raymond J. Scheffler, 92, of Benson

Raymond “Ray” John Scheffler,  92, of Benson, Minnesota passed away  May 10, 2015 at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.  
Mass of Christian Burial was at 11 a.m., Friday, May 15, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Benson. Visitation was held from 4-7  p.m., with a Rosary at 4 p.m. and prayer service at 7 p.m., at St. Francis Catholic Church.  Visitation continued one hour prior to the service at the church  Friday.
Raymond was born  March 4, 1923, to August and Barbara Scheffler in Jordan, Minnesota. He was a graduate of Jordan High School in 1941. Ray was inducted into the United States Army Air Corps in 1945 where he served in Greenland as an aerial photographer.
Raymond married Irene Simon  October 21, 1947 in Veseli, Minnesota. The couple relocated to Benson where they raised their family. Ray worked for Minnesota Valley Breeder’s Association, later 21st Century Genetics.

Lola Ann (Welker) Chesick, 91, area, formerly of Downey, California

A Memorial Service for Lola Ann Chesick will be held  Saturday, May 9, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson, Minnesota. Interment will be at the Benson City Cemetery.
Lola Ann (Welker) Chesick, 91, formerly of Downey, California, (having resided also in Willmar, Minnesota in recent years), passed away quietly from natural causes at the Chris Jensen Nursing Home in Duluth the morning of April 27, 2015.
Lola was born July 13, 1923  in Torning Township, Benson.
After graduating from Benson High School in 1941, Lola moved to California, where she met her future husband, John Chesick. They married in Naugatuck, CT  March 2, 1946, then returned to California in 1949. She enjoyed working as a school records clerk for the Los Angeles Unified School District until her retirement in 1980.

Roger Allen “Buck” Bronniche, of Huntington Beach, CA (formerly of Benson)

Roger Allen “Buck” Bronniche, of Huntington Beach, CA (formerly of Benson), passed away at the age of 80, at his residence, surrounded by family on April 26, 2015, from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

Roger was born February 16, 1935, in Benson, Minnesota, the son of the late Hattie and Clifford Bronniche. He was the middle son of 7 siblings. He attended school in Benson through high school, graduating class of 1953.  He enjoyed playing football and playing trumpet amongst other activities.  Upon his graduation he enlisted in the Navy.

Roger served in the U.S. Navy as a weather technician aboard the carrier USS Shangri-La during the Korean War. He married Wanda Odell West on February 17, 1956, in Santa Monica, California.

Bernice Clara Prekker Kennedy, Bedford, Virginia

Bernice "Bea" Clara Prekker Kennedy was born on January 15, 1925 in Clara City, the daughter of Edward Prekker and Margaret Christians Prekker.  She died on February 4, 2015 in Bedford, Virginia.
Bernice grew up on a farm outside Murdock.  As a teenager, she left Murdock with girlfriends to work in the Cities for a few years.   Later, Bernice returned to Murdock and worked at Walsh's Cafe.
Upon returning to Murdock, met her husband to-be Earl "Jiggs" Kennedy.  Earl was serving in the military and when he was sent to Ft. Eustis, Virginia, she joined him there and they were married in a chapel on the army base.  Shortly after marrying, Earl was sent to Korea and the now pregnant Bernice returned to Murdock to live with her mother-in-law, Rose Kennedy and her brother-in-law, Eugene Kennedy.  While living in Murdock, Bernice gave birth to her first daughter, Eileen.
