Rita J. Tostenson

Rita J. Tostenson, 77, of Swift Falls, Minnesota, passed away Thursday afternoon, January 7, 2021, at Glen Oaks Senior Living in New London.

A private family service will be held and followed by interment in the Swift Falls Cemetery.  A celebration of Rita’s life will be held at a later date.

Rita J. Tostenson was born  May 30, 1943, in Swift Falls, the daughter of Rudy and Ione (Wallin) Skare.  Rita grew up in Swift Falls where she was baptized and confirmed at Swift Falls Lutheran Church. Rita attended school in District 13 Swift Falls, and High School in  Benson.  

Rita was united in marriage to Charles Odell Tostenson October 14, 1961 in the Swift Falls Lutheran Church. They were blessed with over 59 years of marriage.

Charles and Rita moved to Benson where she worked at the Swift County Bank and then they moved to Crystal, Minnesota in 1966, where they raised their family. Rita worked at Polaris Ind. for 27 years until her retirement.

Valgene ‘Gene’ Molden

Valgene ‘Gene’ D. Molden, 83, of Benson, Minnesota, died Monday, December 21, 2020, at the Knute Nelson Home in Alexandria, Minnesota.  

Valgene Dale Molden was born May 2, 1937 in Swenoda Township, Swift County, Minnesota to Edward and Bertha (Schuerer) Molden.  He was baptized in the Lutheran faith and confirmed at the Big Bend Lutheran Church.  Valgene attended school at District 72 through eighth grade.

He was joined in marriage to Lillian Ann “Toots” (Hagen) March 10, 1962 and enjoyed 58 years of marriage.  Together they raised their six children in the Benson area.

Valgene worked for the Chevrolet dealership, Kleven Construction and Berens Construction of Benson before starting his own heavy construction, blading and plowing business, Molden Construction. He retired from his business in 2000.

His favorite past times were fishing with his family, raising cattle and giving his grandchildren and great-grandchildren rides on his golf cart.

Norma E. Linhoff

Norma Linhoff, 88, of Willmar, Minnesota died Sunday, December 27, 2020, surrounded by her family at Carris Health Care Center and Therapy Suites in Willmar.

A private family service was held Sunday, January 3, 2021 at Harvey Anderson Funeral home in Willmar.  A private interment was held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Kandiyohi.

Norma Elaine Linhoff was born August 5, 1932, in Benson, Minnesota, the daughter of Peter and Nellie (Johnson) Jergenson.  Norma grew up in Benson and attended Benson Public Schools.  She was baptized September 25, 1932 and confirmed June 8, 1947 at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson.

Harlan D. Paulsrud

Harlan Douglas Paulsrud, 80, of Benson, Minnesota, died peacefully Saturday evening, December 26, 2020 at the Country Manor Retirement Center in Sartell, Minnesota. Visitation was held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Benson, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m.  Burial may follow in the spring of 2021.

Harlan was born February 3, 1940 in Montevideo (Grace Township), to Edward and Josie Paulsrud. He was baptized March 10, 1940 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Montevideo. He was confirmed at Buffalo Lake Lutheran Church June 27, 1954. He was a graduate of Montevideo High School in 1957. After high school, Harlan joined the United States Navy Air Department and served four years form 1958-1962. After the military, he went to school for Auto Mechanic at Willmar Community College.

LeRoy L. Smith

LeRoy Lee Smith, 88, of Benson, Minnesota, died Thursday, December 24, 2020, at Meadow Lane Nursing Home in Benson. A funeral service will be held at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson at a later date. Interment will be in the Benson City Cemetery.

Kenneth ‘Butch’ Hoffman

Kenneth “Butch” Hoffman, 81, of Holloway, Minnesota passed away Monday, December 21, 2020, in Meadow Lane Health Care Center in Benson.  

Visitation was held from noon-1 p.m., followed by a funeral at 1 p.m., Monday, December 28, 2020, at Zion Lutheran Church in Appleton.  Pastor Roger Fears officiated.  Burial was in Appleton City Cemetery.

Kenneth Raymond Hoffman “Butch” was born November 25, 1939, to Ray and Isabelle (Beyer) Hoffman.  He was born on his parent’s farm in Marysland Township, Swift County, Minnesota.  When he was just a toddler, one of his uncles (either Harold or Howard, maybe both) gave him the name “Butch” and it was his name for the remainder of his life!  Many friends never knew exactly what his name was.  All they may have known was “K. R.”

Mary Ann Larson

Mary Ann Larson, 96, of Benson, Minnesota died December 17, 2020, at Bethesda Grand in Willmar.

Interment will be in the Swenoda Cemetery, Swenoda Township with a celebration of life to be held at a later date.

Mary Ann Genevieve (Goulson) Larson was born at home  September 9, 1924 in Swenoda Township, Swift County, Minnesota to Thomas and Mathilda (Oddan) Goulson.  She was baptized October 12, 1924 and confirmed May 8, 1938 at Mandt Lutheran Church.  She graduated from Milan High School in June 1942 and graduated from Montevideo Teacher Training in June 1943.  She graduated with distinction from the University of Minnesota, Morris on August 21, 1970 with a degree in elementary education.

She married Lawrence Larson September 29, 1945 at Mandt Lutheran Church, and they were married 74 years.  They lived and farmed in Swenoda Township until moving to Benson in 1990.

Eugene ‘Gene’ Sell

Eugene “Gene” Sell, 98, of Willmar, Minnesota (formerly of Murdock) died Tuesday, December 8, 2020 at Copperleaf Senior Living in Willmar.

Mass of Christian Burial was 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 18, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Murdock with visitation one hour prior to the Mass in the church sanctuary.  Interment with military honors was in the church cemetery.  Current guidelines were followed and masks and social distancing were mandatory.  A recording will be available on the funeral home website after the Mass.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred and will be given to the Diocesan Mission at San Lucas Toliman, Guatemala.

Kevin W. “Casey” Clark, 66, died at his ranch home in rural Ben Wheeler, Texas Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2020. A celebration of his life will be held in 2021.  Arrangements are pending with Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson, Minnesota.

James Deiter

James Deiter, 81, left this life Tuesday, December 8, 2020 at his home in Howard Lake, Minnesota. With him were Nancy, his wife of over 58 years and other family.

A memorial service was held Monday, December 14 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Howard Lake beginning at 11 a.m. Visitiation was at 10 a.m. Internment will be in the spring at Greenlawn Cemetery in Redfield, SD near his parents. Memorials may be directed to Ridgeview Hospice or the music department at St. John‘s Lutheran Church of Howard Lake.
