Tuesday’s low sets record for October

The Benson area shattered a record low early Tuesday morning when it fell to 7 degrees at the Benson Municipal Airport’s National Weather Service recording station shortly after 7 a.m.
When you break a record that has stood for 50 years by 7 degrees, it is considered shattered. The old record was 14 degrees set in 1972.
Tuesday morning’s low was even more astounding in that it not only broke the record low for Oct. 18 – it set the record low for all of October. The previous record low for the month was 9 degrees set Oct. 27, 1976.
The average low for the Benson area doesn’t reach 7 degrees until Dec. 15. Tuesday morning’s cold shot was a reminder of what lies ahead.
