Beatrice Simonson

Beatrice Simonson, 82, of Buffalo, Minnesota (formerly of Benson) died Saturday, August 28, 2021, in Lake Ridge Care Center in Buffalo.  

Visitation was held 1:00-2:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m., Friday, September 3, 2021, at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson.  Pastor Zane Anderson officiated.  Burial was in Lake Hazel Lutheran Cemetery, rural Benson.

Beatrice June Simonson was born July 11, 1939, in Starbuck, Minnesota to Oliver and Jennie (Hulberg) Pederson.  She was baptized and confirmed at East Zion Lutheran Church.  She attended first grade at country school, second through 10th grades in Starbuck Public Schools.  Her family moved to Benson, where Beatrice graduated from Benson High School in 1957.

Floyd Guyott

Floyd Guyott of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota passed away August 25, 2021.

There will be a visitation at Billman-Hunt Funeral Home, 2701 Central Ave NE,  Minneapolis, Minnesota,  Thursday,  Sept. 2 from 5-8 p.m.  A funeral mass will be held Sept 4 at 11:30 a.m. with a visitation from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo in Oakes, ND.  Interment will follow at St. Charles Catholic Cemetery.

Floyd was born April 20, 1928 to Arthur and Florence (Carlson) Guyott in Oakes, ND.  

He went to Country School in a one room schoolhouse for eight  years.  He spent many years farming, welding, as a small-town cop, and being a self-employed Handy Man.  He loved riding horse, dancing, playing cards, and being around family and friends.

Helen Mae Olson

Helen Mae Olson, 92, of Benson, Minnesota died Friday, August 27, 2021, at the Meadow Lane Nursing Home in Benson.  Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Friday, September 3, 2021, at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson.  Visitation will continue from 10-11 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m., Saturday, September 4, 2021, at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson.  Interment will be in the Lake Hazel Cemetery.

Helen Mae Olson was born April 5, 1929, at home, in Pope County, Minnesota, the daughter of Emil and Ingeborg (Nelson) Aslakson.  She was baptized April 28, 1929, at West Zion Lutheran Church and was also later confirmed there.  Helen was raised on the home farm in Pope County, near the Midway Store.  

December 17, 1949, Helen was united in marriage to Elmer Oliver Olson, by Rev. Palmer at the West Zion Parsonage.  This union was blessed with nearly 52 years together and three sons: Michael, Stanley, and Leslie.

Carol Jensen

Carol Jensen, 78, of Benson, died Monday, August 23, 2021 at the University of Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis. Visitation will be held  Thursday, September 2, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a Rosary at 4:30, and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m., at St. Francis Catholic Church in Benson and will continue Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in St. Francis Catholic Cemetery.  

Carol Jensen was born December 27, 1942, in Holloway, Minnesota, the daughter of  Howard Louis John and Blanche Marie (Kashmark) Bahl. She was baptized November 9, 1947 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Holloway and later confirmed there July 6, 1952. She grew up in rural Holloway and in Swift Falls. She attended country school near Holloway, St. Francis Catholic School and then graduated from Benson Senior High School.

Inga Long

Inga Long, 93, of Benson, died Friday evening, August 20, 2021, at Scandi Haven Village in Benson.

Visitation was held Tuesday, August 31, 2021, at the Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Inga's family welcomes her friends to join them for a graveside service that will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 1, 2021 (today), at the Benson City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers and per Inga’s request, memorials are preferred to the donor’s local hospice.

Inga Marie Long was born April 24, 1928 in Aurora, Minnesota, the daughter of Joe and Paula Hribar   Zelezikar. She grew up in Aurora. She was baptized by Pastor John Longley in Aurora.  She attended school in Aurora and graduated from Aurora High School. Inga earned her Bachelor’s degree in education and began her teaching career in Kimball, Minnesota.

The City of Benson does ordain:
 
Title XV, Chapter 154, § 154.002 (B) – Definitions, is hereby amended by adding the following paragraph:
 
SLAUGHTER FACILITY.  A facility designed for the purpose of killing animals, skinning, dressing and cutting up of carcasses, wrapping for sale for human consumption with cooler and freezer storage and includes indoor confinement of animals while awaiting slaughter but shall not include any cooking or process related to processing plants such as smoking, curing or the manufacturing of meat by-products or any process related to rendering plants such as the manufacture of tallow, grease, glue, fertilizer or any other inedible product.
 
Title XV, Chapter 154, § 154.056 (B), INDUSTRIAL USES is hereby amended by adding the following line:

Braves hoping for another winning season

The Benson football team had its first winning season in 13 years last fall, going 4-3 overall, including a 3-0 mark in its sub-district to win the regular-season title.

Benson’s last winning season was in 2008 when the Braves went 5-4 overall.  Benson also went 5-5 in 2011.  However, Benson was 3-51 from 2013-2018, a span which included 25-straight losses before the Braves went 3-7 in 2019 and 4-3 last season.

The Braves were set to open up the schedule at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 3 at Kimball Area.  The home opener is set for Friday, Sept. 10 against Long Prairie-GE, which is also Parent’s Night.  The annual Homecoming game is set for 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 17 at home against BBE...
