Notes from coach Andy Abner

The 2018 BHS Trap Shooting season was an interesting one with the spring weather we had. The first few practices had to be canceled due to the cold wet spring. For those of you that are not familiar with the Benson Trap Team, we typically start shooting the first week in April and shoot for nine consecutive weeks. We shoot out at Cottonwood Creek by Big Bend each weekend and we submit our scores to the MN Clay Target League each week. After we are done with the final week of shooting the end of May, we all  look  forward  to  the  MN  State Shoot held in Alexandria.

The state shoot is the largest trap shooting event held in the world. It is nine days of shooting with approx. 800-plus kids shooting each day. We shot on Sunday, June 17 to finish up our regular season. Even with the weather not cooperating, the kids did great, and most of the team members shot their averages or  above their at the state shoot.

The trap team is made up of kids from 7th-12th grade. They must have completed the gun safety course by the time the season has started. This year, we had 62 kids out for the regular season and 52 that attended the state shoot in Alex.  Even with the late start, we had some of the best shooting to begin the season. The kids progressively got better and better each week. For the first year ever, we had six perfect 25 out of 25 at Cottonwood Creek, along with a perfect 50 straight. It is so much fun to see the kids get better year after year.

For the first time, the clay target league has put together a national shoot to be held in Michigan this July. We are fortunate enough to have some students qualify to shoot at this event. And so, July 12-15 we will have a squad of five representing Benson at the national level....
