County, Appleton seek CoreCivic Funding

While CoreCivic is discussing how it reimburses the City of Appleton for its lost real estate taxes due to the sale of the Prairie Correctional Facility to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Swift County is also working on an agreement.
Last month, prison owner  CoreCivic announced that it had signed a five-year contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Aug. 4, but the next day said that it had sold the 1,640-bed prison to federal Department of Homeland Security. While the sale doesn’t have an immediate impact on the potential economic development promise the prisons reopening offers, it will have a profound impact on property taxes and local government budgets.
The federal government doesn’t pay taxes. CoreCivic paid taxes on the prison for the entire 16 years it was closed. Appleton receives one-third of its city property tax revenues from CoreCivic. Swift County and the Lac qui Parle School District also get tax revenue from the prison.
