Medill says there are now 213 U.S. counties “without any local news source, up from 206 last year— almost 80% of these are in counties the USDA classifies as predominantly rural.”...Rural America has been abandoned by large foundations as they focus on “digital innovations” and are largely clueless about what our small towns require to support a news operation. They push digital, ignoring that there are more than 14,600 towns in America with populations of fewer than 5,000.
