udrey Dahl Fennie died Saturday, March 27, 2021.
Due to Covid-19, services will be held at a later date and will be announced.  Audrey will be interred next to Joe in Oakwood Cemetery, Red Wing. Memorials are preferred to   St. Peter’s Lutheran Church or the donor’s choice.
She was born December 23, 1929 at Spring Grove Hospital in Spring Grove, Minnesota, to Elvin and Marie (Jameson) Dahl. Audrey was baptized and confirmed at Highland Prairie Lutheran Church.

Denise “Dee Dee” Kay Hess, 60, of Benson, Minnesota  died Friday morning, March 19, 2021 in Benson. Visitation will be held Saturday, March 27, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the St. Francis Catholic Church in Benson, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am. Interment will follow the service in the St. Francis Catholic Church Cemetery.

Belwin Barry Rode, 80, of Benson, Minnesota died    peacefully Wednesday, March 17, 2021, at Scandi Haven Village in Benson. Visitation was held Sunday, March 21, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Benson, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and continued Monday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Wearing of masks is required. Interment followed the service in the Benson City Cemetery.

Joan Caroline Rich

Joan C. Rich, 88, of Moorhead, Minnesota (formerly of Benson) died Tuesday, March 2, 2021, at The Linden Apartments at Eventide in Moorhead under the care of Sanford Hospice.

Joan was born in Fertile, the daughter of Lloyd and Beda (Tengblad) Knutson. Following high school, she continued her education at Concordia College in Moorhead, graduating in 1954. Joan married Lyle Rich in 1954 and together they made their home in Moorhead.

Joan was a kind and faithful woman. She loved God, family, bird watching, walking and reading. Joan was known for her warm hospitality and unconditional acceptance of others.

Joan is survived by her husband, Lyle; children: Nathan Rich, Naomi (Mark) Hall, Nancy (Rick) Biedermann, Renee’ (George) Kalpakidis; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and brother, James Knutson.
She was preceded in death by her grandson, Evan Hall.

Mable Mae Tirevold

Mable (Mae) Tirevold, 78, of Maple Grove, Minnesota passed away February 24, 2021.

A funeral service will be  held Saturday, April 10, 2021  at 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, 700 Western Ave.,  in Anoka, Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Erhardt (Shorty) and Agnes Schuerman; siblings: Wayne and Arnold Schuerman, and son Douglas Tirevold.  

Mable is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Lyle; children: Greg (Lori) Tirevold of Ramsey, Heidi (Mike) Gandsey of Pequot Lakes; grandchildren: Chelsie (Walker) Vaala of Madison, Mitchell Gandsey of Scandia, Matthew Gandsey of Nevis, Kurtis and Zachary Tirevold of Ramsey:  siblings: sister-in-law LeAnn Schuerman, Owen (Noreen) Schuerman, Wally Schuerman.

Roselyn Skarsten Scott

Roselyn Skarsten Scott passed away February 18, 2021, at the age of 91. She was born March 5, 1929, in Benson township to C.K. and Rose Skarsten during a snowstorm.

Roselyn is lovingly remembered by niece Kay Schmitt (Michael) of Eagan, niece Karla Lapic (Stephan) of San Diego, nephew Roger Skarsten of Germany, niece Sarah Skarsten and sister-in-law Alice Skarsten of Benson, and great-nieces/nephews Lauren Schmitt, Eric Schmitt, Nathaniel Lapic and Katherine Lapic. She also is missed by step-children/grandchildren Troy Scott, Varhonda Smith, Derrick Scott and Renee Mitchell, as well as cherished cousins and dear friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Carl Scott, her parents, sister Genevieve Sandberg and brother-in-law Ken, brother Christ Skarsten, mother-in-law Virginia Carter and stepdaughter Michelle Gaut.

Robert L. Hoiland

Robert “Bob” L. Hoiland, 68, of Benson, Minnesota died Thursday, February 18, 2021 at his home in Benson. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 13, 2021, at the Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ in Benson, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. Interment in the Benson City Cemetery will be at a later date.

Robert (Bob) Lynn Hoiland, passed away unexpectedly February 18 at his home. He was born November 20, 1952 to his parents Ruby (Darling) Hoiland and Leonard Hoiland of Benson who have since preceded him in death.

Robert is survived by his daughter, Jamie (Tim) Boorse, granddaughters: Kiley and Sawyer, brothers: Doug and Joel; four nieces and two nephews as well as great-nieces and great-nephews; former wife Jane Noack Hoiland, her son’s, Jason and Cory and their families, along with many cousins and friends.

LeRoy “Sonny” Lee Smith, 88, of Benson, Minnesota, died Thursday, December 24, 2020, at Meadow Lane Nursing Home in Benson. Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday, March 1, 2021, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson. Interment was in the Benson City Cemetery. Wearing a mask and social distancing will be adhered to.

John D. Thorson

John D. Thorson, 65, of Kerkhoven, Minnesota passed away after a short battle with lung cancer Tuesday, February 16 at his home.

His public visitation was from 2-4:00 p.m., Sunday, February 21 at Church of St. Mary in Willmar. A private funeral was Monday at the church. Burial will be at a later date in Hillside Cemetery in Kerkhoven.

John David Thorson was born February 26, 1955, to Walter and Grace (Whalen) Thorson in Benson. He grew up in Kerkhoven where he lived all of his life. John attended Kerkhoven High School where he graduated May 31, 1973. He played baseball for the Norway Lake Lakers and enjoyed going to his family’s cabin on Lake Andrew. After high school, he started working for Swanson’s Hardware where he continued to work for two years. He then started working at Grossman’s Plumbing, eventually Grossman-Trump, where he continued to work for 48 years!
