Benson will not participate in construction of a new athletic facility at Benson High School that will now primarily be used for the gymnastics program.

School and city officials had met several times in the past weeks to consider what a city investment in the building would cost and what it would provide.

While it was at first thought that a $500,000 addition could be constructed to house a multi-purpose court, walking track, and floor for roller skating, the price came in substantially higher. At last Tuesday night’s Benson City Council meeting it was reported that the cost of the addition would be closer to $975,000.

That was too high, members of the council agreed. They voted unanimously not to participate in the project.
