Donald E. Worden, age 84, of Kerkhoven

Donald E. Worden, 84, of Kerkhoven died Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at his home in Kerkhoven.
Funeral services were 3:00 p.m. Sunday, October 6 at Kerkhoven Lutheran Church. Burial was at Hillside Cemetery in Kerkhoven. Visitation was from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Kerkhoven and continued one hour prior to the service at the church Sunday.
Donald Earl Worden was born December 13, 1928 in Blowers Twp., Ottertail County, Minnesota, the son of Dell and Vernie (Gessner) Worden. He grew up in the Verndale area where he graduated from Verndale High School in the class of 1946. He moved to the Kerkhoven area and worked as a farm hand for Harley Denton before entering the United States Army in May of 1952. He served his country as a mechanic during the Korean War stationed in Europe. Don received an Honorable Discharge April 16, 1954. He returned to the Verndale/Wadena area where he helped his father on the family farm.
Don moved to Kerkhoven in 1959 and was united in marriage to Lucille Fenstra April 28, 1962 at Kerkhoven Lutheran Church. The couple lived and farmed in the Kerkhoven area. Don began selling seed corn in the mid ‘60s and also was a snowplow driver, substitute mail carrier and custom combiner. He retired from farming in 1986 and began working as a full time rural mail carrier in the Benson area until retiring in 1992.
Don was a member of Kerkhoven Lutheran Church and was active as a Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, and a Trustee. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #223 Brenden-Johnson and served as Past Commander. He was also involved in ARC and 4-H as an adult leader.
Don enjoyed fishing, playing cards, dice and most of all visiting with people. He always had a joke or story for everyone. His hobbies included collecting coins, pens and hats. Don enjoyed spending time with his friends and family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Lucille of Kerkhoven; children: Linda (Dean) Nichols of Kerkhoven, Dennis (Kristi) Worden of Sioux Falls, Lisa (Alan) Gielczyk of Kerkhoven, and Laura Worden of Willmar; nine grandchildren and one step grandchild; one great-grandchild and two step-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Lorraine Sellnow of Clarissa and brother Duaine (Nancy) Worden of Dixon, CA and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Dale, Dallas, and Daryl; and two sisters, Betty and June.
