Local stores partner for April Emergency Preparedness Kit Campaign
Local grocery and hardware stores in Big Stone, Chippewa, Lac qui Parle, Swift, and Yellow Medicine counties are teaming up with Countryside Public Health (CPH) this April to help residents prepare for emergencies.
The Emergency Preparedness Kit Campaign will run throughout the month, coinciding with Severe Weather Awareness Week (April 13–17), a timely reminder of the importance of readiness as spring and summer storms approach.
The campaign encourages families to assemble essential supplies that can sustain them during severe weather, power outages, or other emergencies. Participating stores will feature dedicated displays or key items marked throughout the store that may be needed for a basic emergency kit, including:
- Non-perishable food and bottled water
- Flashlights and batteries
- First aid supplies
- Warm blankets and extra clothing
- Personal hygiene items
- Portable phone chargers
“Preparedness starts at home,” said Dawn Bjorgan, CPH Emergency Preparedness Coordinator. “Having a kit ready can make a huge difference in keeping your family safe and comfortable during an emergency.”
Residents can pick up free checklists at participating stores to ensure they have all the recommended items. The campaign also emphasizes the importance of including medications, important documents, and pet supplies in kits.
