Patrick Robert Hess, 88, of Benson, Minnesota, died Friday, November 4, 2022, at the Meadow Lane Nursing Home in Benson. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, November 10, 2022, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Benson. Interment will be at a later date in the Benson City Cemetery. Patrick Robert Hess was born March 7, 1934, in Wheaton, Minnesota, the son of David Nick and Gladys Muriel Hald Hess. He was baptized February 22, 1935, at Zion Lutheran Church in Browns Valley, Minnesota by the Rev. Aug. Englehard and he was confirmed there by Rev. Buenger on March 21, 1948. He grew up in Browns Valley, graduated from Browns Valley High school, then attended Granite Falls Vo-Tech for one year. September 24, 1954, Pat was united in marriage to Mary Eleanor Tolzien at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Beardsley, Minnesota by Rev. William Krueger. This union was blessed with over 67 years together and three daughters. They lived in Brown’s Valley; Babbitt, Minnesota for two years; Ortonville, Minnesota for nine years and Benson for over 50 years. Pat farmed for two years near Beardsley, Minnesota, he owned and operated Drayline for one and a half years in Browns Valley, worked in the Iron Mines in Babbit for two years then worked on a farm in Ortonville for nine years. In Benson, Pat worked as a janitor for the Swift County Benson Hospital and for St. Francis Catholic School for 17 years. He delivered Propane for 12 and a half years in the Benson area. Pat was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Benson where he served as a church elder and as the head usher. He served on the Benson Park Board. Pat enjoyed working in his shop making picture frames and fixing items for family and having coffee with his friends. Over the years, Pat loved spending his time helping the Benson High School Wrestling Program. He was called from this life Friday evening, November 4, 2022, at the Meadow Lane Care Center in Benson. He attained the age of 88 years, seven months, and 28 days. Pat is survived by daughters: Gisele (Michael) Freitag of Elizabeth, Minnesota, Peggy (Gerald) McKeown of Callaway, Minnesota and Lisa (Timothy) Yue of Shakopee, Minnesota; eight grandchildren: Sarah (Greg) Poepping, Jacob (Ryan McGuire) Freitag, Leah (Dustin) Maertens, Rebekah (Tom) Donner, Anita (Dan) Thorson, Samantha Beshear, Joshua (Maren) Yue and Meredith (Paul) Elsing; 15 great-grandchildren: Jackson, Jadah and Jaron Poepping, Jaden, Clara and Emma Thorson, Luke, Michael, Patrick and Oliver Donner, Violet, Gus and Scarlet Maertens, Avery Yue and Thomas Elsing; siblings: David Hess of Embarrass, and Mary B. Sears of Isle; sisters-in-law Phyllis (James) Oletzke of Blaine, Darlys Hess of Fergus Falls, and Gloria Tolzien of Minneapolis, and several other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his grandparents; his parents David and Gladys; brothers Lawrence and Jerry; a brother-in-law Ronald Sears; sisters-in-law Doris and Donna, and grandson-in-law Matt Beshear.
