Benson Mayor Jack Evenson

By Reed Anfinson
Mayor Jack Evenson has filed for a second term on the Benson City Council.
Evenson is the longest-serving member of the Benson council. He was elected to his first four-year term in 2013 and re-elected in 2017. He won election again in November 2021 to a shortened three-year term. He was elected to his first term as mayor in 2022.
He is the only one who has filed for the council though two seats are also up for election this November.
No one had filed for the District 777 Board of Education as of Tuesday morning though four of seven seats will be on the ballot.
Filing for many city and school board seats opened Tuesday morning and will close Tuesday, Aug. 13 at 5 p.m.
Benson’s City Council will have two four-year terms on the ballot for council members and a two-year term for the mayor.
At the end of June, City Council Member Mark Schreck submitted his resignation from the council with six months remaining in his term. He is no longer a resident of the city and, therefore, not eligible to serve on the Benson council.
Former Council Member and Benson Mayor Gary Landmark was named to fill out the remaining time in Schreck’s term. Landmark served as mayor from 2015 to 2017. Prior to that, he served on the council for 24 years, from 1989 to 2013.
In addition to Schreck’s seat, the seat Nancy Maanum won in a special election in April 2023 will be on the ballot.
Maanum is completing the four-year term started by Evenson prior to his being elected for mayor. Maanum started her term with the council’s April 17, 2023, meeting. It runs through Dec. 31.
